IMPORTANT NOTICE:

VCU Health will be Out-of-Network with Humana Medicare Advantage effective January 31, 2025

VCU Health has made the difficult decision to end its contract with Humana Medicare Advantage plans effective January 31, 2025.

After several months of discussions with Humana to address our concerns and negotiate an acceptable contract, we have been unable to reach agreement.  In addition, Humana continues to exclude VCU Health from its transplant network even though we are the largest transplant center in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As a not-for-profit, safety-net health system, sustainable contracts with health insurance companies are vital for our ability to deliver on our multiple missions. Humana has not offered adequate relief to reduce our administrative burden nor address our declining current reimbursement levels.

VCU Health is committed to caring for our community and we recognize how difficult this situation is for the Humana Medicare Advantage patients we serve.

  • Humana patients that would like to maintain access to VCU Health hospitals and physicians for Medicare covered services, may consider changing plans during the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from October 15 to December 7, 2024.  During this time, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, or you can return to original Medicare.  VCU Health participates in most other Medicare Advantage networks including Anthem, United Healthcare, Sentara, Aetna, Cigna and Molina.
  • Humana Medicare Advantage members who are currently in an ongoing treatment program at VCU Health may qualify for a continuity of care exception to retain uninterrupted access to the VCU Health providers they need.  However, Humana must ultimately approve exceptions.
  • We are also available to support patients who elect to keep their Humana coverage and transition their care to a non-VCU Health provider.
  • Any patient who needs immediate care, regardless of their insurance status, may still seek treatment at any of the VCU Health Emergency Departments.

Our patients are at the heart of everything we do, and we continue to work toward an acceptable agreement with Humana.
