Patient Information

Patient information for VCU Medical Center (formally MCV hospitals) call (804) 828-9000 select option 1.

Mail

Cards and letters from friends and family are very important to our patients. Our volunteers deliver mail, Monday through Friday, to our patients. There is no mail delivery on the weekends or holidays. Please use the following format when addressing the envelope:

[Patient’s full legal name]
VCU Medical Center
Box 980256
Richmond, VA 23298-0256

Here are some other helpful tips:

  • Add the word 'Patient' before the patient's name.
  • Make sure the name on the letter or package is the same as the name the patient was checked in under. This means that nicknames and parents' names should not be used.
  • Include a middle name or initial if possible in case there is more than one patient with the same name.
  • The patient's room number or the name of the unit is helpful, if available, but you can still send mail to a patient without it, as long as the name matches an admission record.

Flowers and Balloons

Our volunteers deliver flowers and balloons to our patients staying at VCU Medical Center, Monday through Friday. Your florist must arrange weekend and holiday deliveries. For health reasons, flowers are not permitted in some areas of the medical center, like our intensive care units. Silk flower arrangements may be allowed in some cases. Please check first before sending flowers.

All latex balloons are prohibited in the building. All balloons sent to patients must be made of Mylar. Approved balloons are available for purchase in VCU Medical Center’s Three Bears Gift Shop.

Lending Library

Volunteers deliver books and magazines to patients upon request. Patients or caregivers are also welcome to visit Volunteer Services, located on the first floor of Main Hospital, during business hours on weekdays to look through the selection of donated books and magazines.

Chapel

A nondenominational chapel for meditation and prayer is located on the second floor of Main Hospital. Weekly chapel services are conducted on a regular basis, and all are invited to attend. Our chaplain counselors are trained in helping patients and their families respond to the emotional and spiritual aspects of illness and hospitalization.

You can contact a chaplain counselor by calling patient information (804) 828-9000, or by visiting the Chaplain's Office, located on the second floor of Main Hospital. You may also ask a staff member to contact them for you. The Chaplain's Office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. After hours, your nurse can contact a chaplain for you. Chaplain counselors are available around the clock.

Your own minister, priest, or rabbi is welcome to come to the hospital at any time.
