Comprehensive Aortic Program
We specialize in challenges.
If you have a condition of the aorta or aortic disease, you may be at risk of serious complications like severe internal bleeding and sudden lack of blood flow to vital organs. Where you get treatment matters – our multidisciplinary team has expertise and treatment options available nowhere else in the region. We have experience in open surgical repair and the newest endovascular procedures. Our facilities have multiple state-of-the-art hybrid operating rooms with the latest technology to perform advanced procedures.

Team based approach
A truly team-based approach allows you to benefit from multiple experts and provide individualized treatment plans. You care team vascular and cardiac surgeons, clinical nurses, clinical social worker, your primary care doctor and cardiologist, anesthetist (for surgery only) and the cardiovascular ICU team (for surgery only). Other specialists are involved as needed.
We offer:
- Next-business day appointments for patients with aortic conditions, if needed
- Multiple locations throughout central and southern Virginia
- Valet parking at VCU Medical Center
- In-hospital care by an experienced team of doctors and nurses
We monitor your disease and recommend the right treatment options
Most patients don’t need surgery right away. We want to see your condition using cardiovascular MRI, CT scans or echocardiography. We also assess your history and order additional tests as needed. We talk with you about your goals and collaborate with your primary care provider and cardiologist to create the right aortic disease treatment. We discuss any medications to reduce the risk of surgery. Our team is skilled at monitoring you and your aortic disease and will do so over the coming months and years.
If and when surgery is needed, we offer an integrated approach with vascular surgeons, cardiac surgeons and cardiovascular medicine specialists. We have leading surgical care (link to surgical treatments page) including endovascular and open surgery.
Our facilities have the latest technology
- Cardiovascular imaging with state-of-the art 3D imaging software for MRI and CT scans
- Some locations allow your doctor to see the scan the same day it’s made
- Hybrid operating room allows us to use traditional techniques and minimally invasive treatments
Emergency Transfers to our facility

Then, an emergency alert system mobilizes our specially trained team of vascular surgeons, nurses and technologists who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
