Ear Surgery

When ears protrude, children in particular may be subject to teasing. While ear size, shape, or position does not impact hearing or physical health, these factors can have a significant impact on a child’s psychological wellbeing. By age six, a child’s ears are fully-grown and, if problems have emerged, it’s a good time for parents to seek advice on surgical correction. Adults and children are equally good candidates for otoplasty.

The otoplasty incision is placed in the natural crease behind the ear. Repositioning the ears may also include restoring the natural antihelical fold at the upper edge of the ear; a contour often lacking when ears protrude. After surgery, patients can shower the following day and may wear a protective bandage or ski-type headband to maintain proper ear position during the healing process.
