Neuroradiology

Neuroradiology is a subspecialty of radiology which focuses on the diagnosis of diseases and disorders of the brain, spine, and the head and neck region. These disorders include stroke, brain tumors, aneurysms and vascular malformations, demyelinating disease and degenerative diseases of the spine, trauma, and head and neck cancer. The Department of Neuroradiology is comprised of fellowship-trained, board certified radiologists who are highly skilled in MRI, CT, myelography, diagnostic cerebral and spinal angiography and perfusion imaging, as well as MR spectroscopy. We also perform image-guided procedures for diagnostic purposes including fluoroscopic guided lumbar punctures, myelograms and cisternograms.

There is active collaboration with specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, ENT, and oncology to offer life-saving treatments including coil embolization of aneurysms, arterial stenting, embolization of vascular malformations, thrombectomy for treatment of acute stroke and biopsy of tumors affecting the head and spine. The Neuroradiology Department is integral to VCU Medical Center’s designation as a Level I Stroke and Trauma Center.
