Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention
Bone, joint, ligament, and muscle imaging and procedures
VCU Health Department of Radiology’s Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging and Intervention Section provides a complete spectrum of conventional and advanced imaging and image-guided interventional procedures for the entire musculoskeletal system – the skeleton, ligaments, tendons, muscles and joints. In addition to expertise in all methods of diagnostic imaging, our subspecialty-trained radiologists perform minimally-invasive, image-guided procedures that include therapeutic spine and joint injections for diagnosis and pain relief, removal of joint fluids (joint aspiration), bone biopsies, and radiofrequency tumor ablation. Soft tissue masses, cysts, and abscesses can also be detected and, when necessary, biopsied or aspirated using ultrasound guidance. In addition, our specialists routinely provide MR and CT arthrograms to athletes of all levels – achieving the most detailed imaging evaluation of joints possible.
With extensive experience in diagnosing all varieties of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including trauma and sports medicine, arthritis, and bone and soft tissue tumors, our goal is to make the entire patient experience, from imaging through procedure, as caring and painless as possible.
Team-based, personalized treatment
Our full-time radiologists are certified by the American Board of Radiology and have more than 50 years of combined subspecialty experience. We have expertise in all applicable radiological techniques, including MRI, CT, PET, ultrasound, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), radiography, standard x-rays and fluoroscopic-guided procedures. We collaborate with experts inside and outside VCU Health Radiology, tapping into multiple medical disciplines to use the sum of our knowledge to care for each patient.
