Academic Affiliations

The Rehab Services Department of VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital is committed to fostering the development of students aspiring towards health care careers. The department is actively involved in this program through the process of serving as a host site for students performing clinical internships.

VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital has academic affiliations with Old Dominion University, Medical College of Virginia, Radford University, Roanoke College of Health Sciences, Winston Salem State University, John Tyler Community College, Southside Virginia Community College, California College of Health Sciences, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Nash Community College, Elon College, Tidewater Community College and Longwood University.

Student internship experience is available for students pursing degrees in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Exercise Science and Noninvasive Cardiovascular Diagnostics.

The American Physical Therapy Association has a clinical instructor certification program. The CMH Physical Therapist with responsibilities of student oversight is Certified as Clinical Instructors by the American Physical Therapy Association.

In addition to supporting the development of students at the collegiate level, the Rehab Services Department strives to generate interest in school age children to pursue a profession in the medical field. Throughout the school year, the Rehab Department visits local schools participating in programs for K-12 grades. These programs include asthma education, career fairs, health fairs and guided tours of the Rehab Services Department. We consider it a privilege to work with young people and promote our professions.

Request for internships or observation hours should be sent in writing to the Director of Rehab Services. All students are required to complete an orientation process.

Accreditations

Vascular Lab is ICAVL accredited. This is the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Labs. Website is www.icavl.org

Echo Lab is ICAEL accredited. This is the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echo Labs. Website is www.icael.org.

For both labs, our accreditation is for the adult population only.

Cardiac Rehab Program is accredited by American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehab. Website is www.AACVPR.org.

The blood gas lab operated by the Respiratory Department is CAP accredited. This is a component of the hospital wide Lab accreditation process. Also, the Respiratory Department received the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition Certificate from the American Association for Respiratory Care.
