Picking a Pediatrician: Your Partner in Caring for Your Baby
A pediatrician is your valued partner in caring for your newborn from the first days of life into adolescence. We work closely with the pediatricians at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) as you take the first steps in establishing that important relationship.
Before your baby is born, you may schedule a prenatal conference with potential pediatricians and tour the clinics,
by calling 804-828-CHoR (2467). View profiles of CHoR physicians.
After your baby’s birth and before you are discharged, an appointment will be made for your newborn, typically 1 to 3 days after birth. Your pediatrician will check your baby’s weight and feeding routine, and for possible jaundice.
For breastfeeding support, pediatricians who are certified breastfeeding consultants are available to meet with new moms and their babies by appointment.
Regular well-baby exams are then scheduled at about 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and a year. These visits allow your pediatrician to:
- Monitor growth and development
- Provide immunizations
- Address your questions and concerns
- Provide guidance as your child grows
The pediatrician you choose will be primarily responsible for your child’s care and will see your child at all well-child and urgent visits whenever possible.
