Diagnosis and Treatment

We aim to help you fully enjoy your life

At VCU Health, our Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery specialists use the latest technology and innovations to diagnose and treat women with various conditions of the pelvic floor. Your care begins with a comprehensive exam, along with targeted tests that allow physicians to decipher what is happening to you and to develop a tailored treatment plan that will improve your daily life.

Expect to receive the latest treatments in pelvic health. You also will benefit from the investments our medical team are making in researching and developing new ways to treat all types of gynecologic conditions – including both nonsurgical methods and advanced surgery, for the most complex cases.

For the greatest success, your care might include one or more of these treatments:

  • Pelvic floor physical therapy: We give you the tools to help you improve your health, including changing your lifestyle, retraining your bladder, and doing specific exercises to improve your pelvic muscles. You also might get biofeedback and electrical stimulation (applying a mild electric current to nerves) treatments.
  • Medicines: Conventional prescription treatments remain an important strategy for urinary urgency, frequency and incontinence.
  • Specialized devices and treatments: Sometimes, you need a little more help, and our physicians can place removable devices, such as vaginal pessaries, in your pelvic region to improve or correct your symptoms and conditions. On an outpatient level, we treat urinary incontinence with injections of Botox or urethral bulking agents and acupuncture type nerve therapy.
  • Surgery: No matter which surgical option your team recommends, our medical experts have the experience and expertise, including reconstructive vaginal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic surgery. As medical researchers ourselves, we are committed to using proven approaches that reduce pain and make your recovery quicker.

Among the most frequent conditions we treat are pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, removal of ineffective vaginal mesh, fistula repair and hematuria, or blood in the urine.

We treat every patient individually, and our treatment for each woman is tailored to her specific need. And we promise that every woman receives the same high level of care and compassion, as we get you back to feeling like you – and ensure you aren’t suffering in silence anymore.
