Neuro-Ophthalmology
Symptoms treated by a neuro-ophthalmologist include:
- Unexplained vision loss
- Transient vision loss
- Visual field problems
- Double vision
- Abnormal eye movements
- Unequal pupils
- Eyelid abnormalities
Sometimes these are benign findings, but sometimes they can be important clues to conditions which might cause permanent vision loss or serious illness. Neuro-ophthalmologists often diagnose conditions such as; multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, brain tumors, vascular disease, trauma, infections, degenerative disorders and more.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
A complete neuro-ophthalmology evaluation is an extensive process and may take a few hours to complete. You will first review the history of your condition and other medical history and review any testing that may have been completed prior to your referral. (If you have had CT or MRI scans done, then it will be useful to bring those images with you on the day of your visit.) There will be both a neurologic exam and a focused eye exam. Depending on your condition, your eyes may need to be dilated. Additional testing might be needed such as computerized visual field test or specialized eye photographs or images. Finally, your condition will be explained to you including any plan for further testing or treatment and follow up.
