VCU Health names Chief Medical Information Officer
The leadership role provides a medical perspective for strategic planning and implementation of technology used in clinical and research spaces across the health system.

VCU Health is welcoming Jeffrey Kim, M.D., back to Richmond as he joins the health system as chief medical information officer (CMIO). Kim will begin this role on Dec. 24.
This administrative position provides medical leadership for the implementation and advancement of innovative information technology used in clinical and research environments. The CMIO will work collaboratively across VCU Health System and lead the Physician Informatics team.
“In his role, Dr. Kim will play an essential part in delivering information technology and process changes that enhance the physician experience and the delivery of patient-centered care,” said Ellen Wiegand, chief information officer of VCU Health System.
Kim, board certified in Clinical Informatics, has extensive medical informatics experience and has held a series of clinical and informatics leadership positions throughout his career. He recently served as CMIO and medical director of digital health for Loma Linda University Health and assistant medical director for Loma Linda University Health Care Managed Care in Loma Linda, California. Kim also brings 15 years of experience as a practicing physician, with a specialty in family medicine.
Kim received his pre-medical basic health sciences certificate in microbiology/immunology from Virginia Commonwealth University, in addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and Doctor of Medicine degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed a residency in family medicine at Michigan Medicine.
Sean McKenna, M.D., served as the interim CMIO for the last several years.
“I’d like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for Dr. McKenna, who oversaw the implementation of Epic, a medical records software which has improved provider support, to enable our mission and strategic goals,” Wiegand said.
