Frequently Asked Questions

Our Emergency Center at New Kent is a freestanding emergency center that provides round-the-clock emergency care for all ages, closer to your home.

What is a freestanding emergency center?

Emergency rooms can be inside a hospital or freestanding. A freestanding emergency center works just like a hospital-based emergency room but is more conveniently located in the community. It is not an urgent care facility.

When should I go to an emergency center?

Emergency rooms are the best place to treat real emergencies, life-threatening injuries and illnesses. Examples include:

  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Signs of a stroke
  • Major burns
  • Head injuries

When should I go to an urgent care facility?

Urgent care facilities are great for an injury or illness that is not life-threatening but is important to manage quickly. Examples include:

  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Minor fractures
  • Cuts and scrapes
  • Allergies
  • Vomiting

What services do you provide?

We work like a regular emergency department, not like an urgent care facility. We are the right place for complicated injuries, such as open fractures or injuries that require sedation, IV fluids or special equipment. We have on-site and advanced imaging, including digital X-rays and CT scans, to quickly diagnose and treat you.

How much will it cost?

We bill like a regular emergency department. You can always choose to go to an emergency center if you want to, but your bill and out-of-pocket expenses will be higher at emergency center rates. To find out about your cost of care, we recommend checking with your insurance provider about your emergency room copay.

I am unsure where to get care based on my symptoms.

Ask your primary care provider where to seek care based on your medical issues. If you or a loved one has a medical emergency, go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.
